Azerbaijan opposition demands Panama Papers investigation regarding President Aliyev

The opposition in Azerbaijan has petitioned to the office of public prosecutor of the country, and demanded an investigation into the case involving President Ilham Aliyev being on the Panama Papers.

The Azerbaijani Popular Front Party petitioned Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov urging him to investigate all materials in the Panama Papers which refer to Azerbaijan, RFE/RL reported.

The opposition recalled that neither Aliyev nor his wife have submitted income statements on their offshore companies.

In early April, The Guardian daily British newspaper ran an article, in which it was noted that the Aliyev clan has hundreds of millions of dollars worth of offshore real estate.

The Panama Papers are a set of 11.5 million leaked documents detailing attorney–client information for more than 214,000 offshore companies associated with the Panamanian law firm and corporate service provider, Mossack Fonseca. The leaked documents contain the identities of company shareholders and directors associated with Mossack Fonseca, and illustrate how wealthy individuals, including public officials, hide assets from public scrutiny.
