The agreement on setting up an Armenia-Russia united air defense system in the Caucasus does not apply to Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh).
Ara Nazaryan, Deputy Minister of Defense of Armenia, on Tuesday stated the abovementioned during the National Assembly debates on whether to ratify this agreement.
He stated this while reflecting on opposition MP Lyudmila Sargsyan’s remarks that people are concerned that if clashes occur along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan line of contact and Russian would have a different position, Armenia will not be able to use this united air defense system.
“The agreement applies only to Armenia and Russia,” said Nazaryan. “It will not apply to Artsakh.”
The aforementioned document has brought forth a reaction among certain Armenian political and civic circles. They argue that, with this agreement, Armenia will be surrendering its airspace and security to Russia.
