Vahagn Khachaturyan elected new Armenian president

The Armenian parliament elected Vahagn Khachaturyan as new president of the country in a second round of vote on Thursday.

He had been nominated for president by the ruling Civil Contract faction and was the sole candidate.

All 71 Civil Contract MPs, who took part in the election, backed his candidacy.

In the first round held on Wednesday, the former high-tech minister received 69 votes, falling short of 12 votes to be elected president.

Khachaturyan needed 65 votes to be elected in the second round.

The opposition Hayastan (Armenia) and With Honor factions refused to take part in the election of the new president.

Khachaturyan is the fifth president of Armenia.
