The lower house of the Chilean parliament, the Chamber of Deputies, has formally recognized the events that took place in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 as genocide.
Turkey on Thursday protested against the respective resolution that was passed in the Chamber of Deputies of this South American country, declaring that it “has no force.”
“Parliaments do not have the right to interpret the events that happened in history and make judgments about them,” the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated, claiming that the aforesaid resolution also contradicts the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, according to Anadolu Agency.
As per the Turkish MFA, the crime of genocide can be considered only by a competent court.
