The COP29 climate conference is a historic opportunity to establish peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Nicolas Schmit, the European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, stated this at the European Parliament plenary session dedicated to Armenian-Azerbaijani relations and the human rights situation in Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have never been so close to overcoming the decades-long conflict. The COP29 conference will be a historic opportunity for Azerbaijan and Armenia to demonstrate to the world their commitment to peace and demonstrate the political will to sign a peace agreement. The European Union continues to provide full support to the settlement process and is ready to mobilize the necessary resources so that all parties can reap the benefits of a lasting and sustainable peace, the European commissioner emphasized.
According to him, Azerbaijan is facing an important choice, both in relation to the human rights situation in the country and the peace process with its neighbor, Armenia.
There is a need to keep the lines of communication open and use relations to promote multifaceted human rights, peace, and stability in Azerbaijan and the entire region, Schmit added.
