Armenian parliament adopts anti-air defense agreement with Russia

The Armenian National Assembly on Thursday gave its approval to the agreement on creating a join anti-air defense zone with Russia.
The bill was overwhelmingly supported by the parliament, with 102 lawmakers voting “for” and another eight – “against”, our correspondent reports from the National Assembly.
The deal initially received an unequivocal reaction by the political forces, with many being concerned that the country was thus losing its right to an independent decision-making. While the debate was going on, civic activists and politicians were rallying outside the National Assembly in protest against the measure.
But the authorities highlighted only the advantages of the document which they said is the continuation of an earlier deal signed with the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) member states back in 1995.
