Heydar Aliyev statue vandalized in downtown Baku

The statue of Heydar Aliyev, the late President of Azerbaijan, was vandalized in downtown Baku, the capital city of the country.

RFE/RL reported about the aforesaid, once the respective photographs were posted on the Internet.

Someone wrote “Long live the statues of slaves,” in Azerbaijani and in English, on the pedestal of the statue, which is located in a crowded area and nearby numerous institutions.

Nothing is known so far about the persons behind this act. But judging from the fact that, aside from the said writing, there is also the symbol of the anarchists, it can be assumed that the leftist forces, which have recently appeared, are involved.

The day for this vandalism was not accidental either, since it is on that day that the Azerbaijani elite marked the 93rd birth anniversary of the “father of the [Azerbaijani] people,” and which is long celebrated in the country as the “festival of flowers.” To note, the writing on the statue implies this.
