July 5, 2016 – Armenian Constitution Day
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my best wishes to the Canadian Armenian community on the occasion of Armenian Constitution Day.
The Constitution of Armenia was adopted in a nationwide referendum on July 5, 1995, four years after Armenia gained independence from the Soviet Union. The 117 Article Constitution established Armenia as a democratic, sovereign, social and constitutional state. On November 27, 2005, a national referendum was held and Armenians voted overwhelmingly in favour of the revisions to the Constitution that were necessary in order for Armenia to join the Council of Europe.
Armenian Constitution Day is a public holiday and commemorates the creation of a new governmental framework and the beginning of a new era for the country. The day is marked with speeches and cultural performances featuring traditional music and dance.
This year I had the opportunity to visit Armenia at the invitation of Union of Communities of Armenia and I was present the Yerevan Republic Square when Pope Francis called declared the Armenian Genocide. I also visited a number of city councils and mayors to discuss mutual municipal concerns.
Our city flourishes because of the diversity of people who have chosen to make Toronto their home. Toronto’s diverse communities share and celebrate their cultures and traditions with residents in every corner of our city.
As a city proud of its multiculturalism, each and every community plays a part in enhancing Toronto’s social and cultural landscape.
