President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday addressed the extended session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, which is convened in the Kazakh capital city of Astana.
In his words, integration associations function and develop with success in a safe environment.
“Azerbaijan’s escalation of the situation on the line of contact with Nagorno-Karabakh and the border with Armenia, in early April, became a serious challenge for the security of the EAEU [i.e. Eurasian Economic Union] region,” stressed Sargsyan. “The peril is apparent: either the Eurasian Economic Union will be viewed by our international partners as a zone of economic development, stability and security, (…) or everyone will get used to this complicated situation and be guided by the fact that there are permanent hotbeds of tension and split here.”
The President noted that Armenia cannot remain indifferent in the event of Azerbaijan’s aggressive actions against Nagorno-Karabakh.
“Armenia intends to consistently worked towards the implementation of these arrangements [regarding confidence-building measures], and continue to seek a peaceful settlement which, first and foremost, will be based on the right of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh to master their own destiny and to self-determination,” President Serzh Sargsyan concluded, in particular.
