Armenia and Italy presidents discuss friendly relations

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan visited the Vittoriano Museum Complex and met with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella during his official visit to Italy.

During the meeting, President Sargyan expressed hope that his visit will give new momentum to the Armenian-Italian friendly relations.

In the context of stable development of bilateral relations, the parties stressed that the two countries have a comprehensive bilateral legal framework that contains more than three dozen legal documents.

The Armenian leader thanked the Italian people, who saved and gave shelter and new hope to the survivors of the Armenian Genocide. Serzh Sargsyan also thanked Italy for the unanimous recognition of the Armenian Genocide about 15 years ago.

The Armenian and Italian leaders discussed settlement of Karabakh conflict. Sergio Mattarella noted that Italy is supporter of exclusively peaceful resolution of the conflict within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on the basis of the principles of peaceful settlement of conflicts, territorial integrity and self-determination of nations.

Italian President expressed satisfaction with the fact that after joining the Eurasian Economic Union, Armenia continues to develop relations with EU and added that Armenia’s accession to the EEU will open new prospects for the development of relations between Armenia and Italy.

The sides stressed the importance of cooperation between the two countries in the field of tourism. In this context, restoration of regular direct flights between Armenia and Italy – from Yerevan to Rome or other cities – was noted as an important precondition.

Serzh Sargsyan and Sergio Mattarella agreed that given the existing potential in trade, economic, educational, scientific, cultural and other fields, it is possible make some moves in the direction of establishing Armenian-Italian intergovernmental commission that will be engaged in the work in the mentioned areas.
