Armenia President and Russia Federation Council Chairman discuss cooperation

President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan had a meeting today with the Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko, who is on a two-day official visit to Yerevan, as well as the members of the delegation led by her.

At the beginning of the meeting, Sargsyan once again offered condolences in connection with the catastrophe of the Russian jet, which was flying from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg. The President proposed to observe a minute of silence in memory of the victims.

The parties discussed a number of issues on deepening and enhancing their bilateral strategic partnership, as well as the role of legislative authorities in that process.

In this context, the interlocutors highly appreciated the role of the Armenian-Russian Inter-parliamentary Commission. Reference was also made to the significance of cooperation between the Armenian and Russian regions.

President Serzh Sargsyan welcomed the participation of Valentina Matviyenko in the 4th Armenian-Russian Inter-Regional Forum, which will take place in Yerevan tomorrow. According to him, the forum is an important means for discussing issues on the agenda of the Armenian-Russian cooperation, developing effective mechanisms and determining new perspective directions of decentralized cooperation. Apart from this, the President underscored the importance of the participation of youth organizations in Yerevan forum.

Furthermore, the parties exchanged opinions on international issues, also touching on regional challenges and current stage of negotiation process on normalizing the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
