Celebrities in Armenian Photographers’ Eyes

Summer exhibition opens in Yerevan

As part of the Yerevan City Hall’s summer season events, the cultural center Hay-Art has hosted the opening of the exhibition “Celebrities in Armenian Photographers’ Eyes”.
The exhibition features around 20 late 19th and early 20th century Armenian photographers, including Abdullah Brothers, Ara Guler, Antoin Sevruguin, Hovhannes Kyurkchyan,  Yusuf Karshi, Arto Gavuk, Gegham Tarverdyan and Andranik Kochar. Having settled in most different countries, the artists have, over the course of their creative career, made an essential contribution to those states’ cultural life, gaining an international recognition, the municipality’s press service reports.

Collected by Andranik and Vahan Kochar (father and son artists), the photos, depicting the authors’ life and work, were later compiled in the book of “Armenian Photographers” under the sponsorship of the late Prime Minister Andranik Margaryan.

“We are planning to launch in the near future an exhibition hall in the capital to exhibit not only Armenia but also other acclaimed contemporary artists’ works standing out with their high mastery and perfection.”

Andranik Sukiasyan, a deputy mayor attending opening event, evaluated the exhibition as an important achievement in the capital’s cultural life, promising to make the project on-going.

Thanking the municipal authorities for permanent attention to culture and new and important initiatives, Vahan Kochar emphasized that most of the photos on display were original works (which made the exhibition exceptional). By the artist’s desire, the collection was donated to the Yerevan History Museum.
