Levon Kocharyan, the younger son of Armenia’s second President Robert Kocharyan, was sworn in as the opposition Hayastan bloc’s new MP at a parliament session on Tuesday.
Kocharyan was approved as an MP by the Central Electoral Commission on 6 November and was released from from pre-trial detention.
The move came two weeks after Hayastan MP Armen Charchyan submitted resignation. The three candidates above Levon Kocharyan on the Hayastan alliance’s 2021 electoral list formally refused to take up the vacant seat.
Levon Kocharyan was arrested during anti-government protests in Yerevan on September 22 and charged with assaulting police officers strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
