Patrick Karam: I mourn all my illusions of an international order

Days of mourning, infinite suffering before the forced capitulation of the valiant Armenian fighters, betrayed and abandoned by all. Patrick Karam, a member of the Ile-de-France regional council of France, wrote this on his X microblog.

“I could have never fathomed that one day the Azerbaijani army would parade through the streets of Stepanakert. I never would have imagined that my generation would see any Armenian presence eradicated from its historic lands.

I would never have believed that the international community, the West, and Europe would cowardly remain silent in the face of this looming threat of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Today, I mourn the international law, which was flouted without any reaction. I mourn the loss of the United Nations Security Council, which has shown its inconsistency in enforcing international law.

I mourn all my illusions of an international order which would protect the weakest against the aggression of a dictatorship.

Today is a day of mourning, and I don’t want to hear another word about Ukraine,” he wrote.

Earlier, Armenian News-NEWS.am reported that Azerbaijan on Tuesday launched a large-scale attack on Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh). As a result, more than 200 people were killed and 400 others were wounded. In Azerbaijan, the latter’s actions to destroy the civilian population of Nagorno-Karabakh were called “local antiterrorist measure.”

Based on the difficult situation on the front, the Artsakh authorities on Wednesday accepted the proposal of the Russian peacekeepers regarding the cessation of fire. Accordingly, an agreement was reached on the complete cessation of hostilities as of 1pm, September 20.
