UN Secretary General is concerned about situation with refugees from Karabakh

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is concerned about the situation regarding the displacement of a large number of residents of Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, and the UN is ready to provide assistance. The representative of the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq, said at a briefing.

“The General Secretary is very concerned about the displacement of people to Armenia as a result of the recent events in the region. It is important that the rights of the displaced population are protected and that they receive the humanitarian assistance they need, as well as protection under international refugee law,” he said.

“At the moment, we are not engaged in humanitarian work. However, the representatives of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) are there, in the south of Armenia, where most of the displaced population is going,” he continued. “As for the question of where it is moving from, as far as I know, there are ICRC representatives there.”
