Zakharova: By deepening cooperation with NATO, Yerevan risks seriously destabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus

The task of the United States and the European Union is obviously to try to gain a foothold in the region to the detriment of the interests of the traditional partners and neighbors of the South Caucasian countries. And, apparently, they are succeeding in doing so precisely on the territory of the country you have mentioned. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry at a briefing today, July 18, in response to a question about the reason for the close attention of the United States to Armenia.

“In Armenia, they prefer to build up interaction with NATO. It’s a strange story, of course. They participated in the Alliance summit in Washington and conduct joint military maneuvers. A clear example is the U.S.-Armenian Eagle Partner exercises now underway in the country. This is not only regrettable. It raises concern for Armenia’s future, because the United States and, naturally, the EU, as the NATO Economic Department is already considered to be, have conducted such machinations with many countries more than once,” she said.

According to Maria Zakharova, “you also know very well how this so-called ‘eagle partnership’ ends”.

“They use it, then throw it away for lack of use. By deepening cooperation at this pace with those whose goal, as the United States and NATO members declare, is the strategic defeat of Russia, Yerevan risks seriously destabilizing the situation in the South Caucasus to the detriment, among other things, of its own security. In my opinion, everything is obvious,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
