The Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defense and Security on Tuesday gave its positive conclusion to a €1.3 million worth NATO assistance project.
The allocations, envisaged under the Cooperation Agreement between Armenia and the NATO Support and Procurement Agency, will be the alliance’s first ever financial aid initiative for Armenia, said Artak Zakaryan, a deputy minister of defense.
“After three years of negotiations, Germany agreed to allocate €1.3 million through the NATO Trust Fund to facilitate the implementation of the project. The proceeds of about €100,000 will be directed to humanitarian initiatives,” he noted.
Under the Fund’s support, it is planned to destroy 140 units of armored equipment and 21 armored vehicles.
The Ministry of Defense has been a NATO ally since 1995 after the signing of the Security Agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the North Atlantic Alliance.
